Unit 3 Projects
Coil Construction - First I started by building the rainbow-shaped coil and then making three more I was gonna make many more and make them larger but I decided against it. Then I had to find a way to attach them to that's where the coil in the middle came in. My way to make sure everything stayed in place was I attach clay to the back of the coild=s so the bottom was flat.
Reflection -What went well was making the coil in the middle and having it like bend in the way it did without cracking. And also probably the way I made most of the rainbow-shaped coils pretty much the same size. What I would do differently is probably make it larger and have a better plan. Also, I would probably have tried to do more techniques to make the piece more interesting.
Slump mold construction - This took me many tries what finally worked was rolling out a large piece of clay. Then I wrapped my clay around the bottle of my choosing pretty sure I used a coffee glass. I then attached the edges so the gaps in the side were closed. I then cut the bottom and made the top even. I then attached the bottom of the cup and attached a handle.
Reflection - What went well was how I finally realized I needed to get a thicker piece of clay so that the clay wouldn't crack because of how thin it was. Something else I had done well was The handle I had also realized I had to make the handle thicker and decided to make it in a squiggly kinda shape. Something I could proboaly do better if I were to do this again is make it a bit thinner and taller. Or something I would probably do was make it into a pitcher cup and design it as a sgraffito sort of design.
Monster construction - The way I constructed this piece was based on the design done by Gracie. I started by getting a piece of clay and hollowing it out to make the body. Then I decided to construct the legs in a weird way where I attached the front and back together so that it would be easier to hollow out. Then I decided to add the tale attached to the body so it wouldn't break so easily. And last I added the facial features which included the horns and the unicorn horn along with the duck mouth.
Reflection - What I did well was proboaly the head and the wings. I do wish I could have taken more time to figure out a way to construct this more efficiently. If I were to do it again I would proboaly have picked an easier more achievable monster instead of like thinking I was more skilled than I truly am. Something I would change is the leg construction I would try to figure out a way to make them look better while still being efficient.
Sgrafito Constuction - .First I started this project with a Halloween theme in mind. So I started by making a pinch pot and adding a rind to the bottom so it was slightly elevated. Then I let it dry a bit so I could paint it and later carve it. Once it was dry and I was able to begin carving it I started trying to make a haunted house sort of look along with carving in a few pumpkins. I then decided it looked too bare and added a tree carving I still thought I needed so I carved in these swirls all around the cup just to have more going on.
Reflection - What I believe I did well is the shape of the pot I think I did well with how it is shaped and how it was constructed. I also really like the design I did like the tree was proboaly my favorite. Something I think I could have done better was instead of carving in a glaze I should have done an underclave so that it would be smooth all around. Something I also wish I could have done better was while it dried I wish I made sure the bowl stayed round because I dried it facing down so the feet would dry properly but the bowl came out a bit wonky because it was angled.
Poem Piece construction - This piece was originally my animal ring holder design. My construction was first started with the body of the swan. I made a small lump of clay and started to form a dip in the middle to become the holder part. Then I created the head by first forming the head and then I holloed the neck just in case. I waited for it to dry and decided to add some texture to it and carved some feather designs in it just to bring it to life more. Then I of course painted it white and the eyes black and the yellow beak. I then submitted it to the poem response bucket with the name "duck, duck, swan".
Reflection- I am proud of how the head turned out and the face. I also really like how I did the texture on the swan I think it adds a very lively look to the piece and makes it less boring. Something I would've done is probably make a tail, or at the back because swans do have like a tale just to give it more body. I also wish I could have added something showing that there were wings. Also, something I had not noticed was that the neck is slightly bent I wish I could've straightened that out a bit.
Darted cup construction - For this I had a very hard time with the construction but eventually figured it out. I began by rolling out the clay and cutting the edges to make the height I wanted for the cup. I then cut the sides at an angle for a clean attachment. after that, I began to square the cup out a bit so I could then make the four somewhat even diviets. After I made the even triangle cuts I halved the edges once again for an easy attachment. After I made the attachment and the shape was sealed to how I wanted it I then added the bottom layer so that the cup could stand. And then last I attached a handle.
Reflection - this cup disappeared from the shelves i have no clue where this piece ended up that's why there is no finished photo. What I felt I did the best on was the handle, to be honest. And how smoothly I made the outside. What I would do differently is the whole thing. I would remake the divets because they were different sizes so the cup was very uneven on both sides. Then I would have remade the bottom of the cup which you can proboaly see in the photo the bottom is a little wonky and defiantly not very sturdy. I would also even though I liked it I would put more effort into the handle to make it much smoother and maybe a little more creative.
